Is it not a hassle that average folk like us have to make an effort to get that special treatment, whereas A-C class celebrities only need to show their tabloid-worthy faces to have an entire restaurant team grovel at their feet eager to fulfill their every demand.
Well, sigh, let’s get over our self-pity and try these strategies to get what we want:
Be kind and considerate, which in a nutshell means likeable
Before making a request, try to connect with the other person. For example by asking them how they are, as people are more likely to agree to a favour if they like you.
Have courtesy
Ask ‘Do you mind’ when asking for a favour and let the other person know how grateful you are for their efforts.
Solve problems
You can make any request sound less like an imposition if you think of it as problem-solving. This stops you feeling uncomfortable, and encourages the other person to focus on positive outcomes. Explain what you want, then ask ‘What’s the best way to…’ or ‘How could we make this happen?’ as suggested by Jane Hannon, author for Psychologies UK.
Make a final appeal
When you’ve tried everything else, make one final, direct appeal. Try asking ‘What can I say or do to change your mind?’ If the answer is nothing, then accept it with good grace, but you might prompt the person into revealing exactly what it is you need to do to make them say yes.
